Differential Fluid Change

Filling the Differential

April, 2005

Time to prep the cover for reinstallation. I run a bead around the sealing surface of the cover, not the differential, making sure to go completely around the bolt holes, and then wait 3 to 5 minutes for a skin to form on the bead of RTV. As always, I will torque the bolts to the proper specs in a star pattern, similar to when mounting a wheel.

Once everything is back together and sealed, I use a small pump to fill the differential full of new fluid until it starts to pour back out of the drain hole. I like to park with the nose of the Jeep pointing downhill so that I am sure to get the rear diff as full as possible. Then, I can reinstall the drain plug and torque to the proper specification.
